Townhouse EnerPHit

  • PROJECT: Deep whole-house retrofit and extension

  • LOCATION: Didsbury, Greater Manchester

  • ENERGY TARGET: EnerPHit

  • TECH: Solar panels, air source heat pump and MVHR

This is a phased project which targets the EnerPHit standard. The first phase saw new, high-quality triple-glazed windows and doors installed, along with re-covering, insulating and making airtight the roof. Solar panels were also installed which link to a battery, providing sustainable low-cost electricity throughout the year. Later stages will see an air-source heat pump being utilised for this retrofit and the house will be mechanically ventilated with heat recovery.

The later phases will see a new large open-plan living space to the rear (including a new extension) and a replan upstairs, to create a more efficient layout. The existing brick walls are to be wrapped in external wall insulation and rendered at the side and rear. The front is to have internal wall insulation so the brick façade can be kept, adding to the character of the street.
